Mumbai, India – Veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, best known for directing the 1991 blockbuster Phool Aur Kaante, which launched Ajay Devgn’s Bollywood career, passed away on Tuesday following a massive heart attack. He was 77. According to his filmmaker friend Ashoke Pandit, Kohli was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after feeling unwell and died around 4:30 pm. “He was feeling uncomfortable and hence was admitted to the hospital yesterday. He passed away due to a massive heart attack,” Pandit told PTI.
Kohli, whose real name was Avtar Kohli, began his career working under the legendary Raj Kapoor and other prominent filmmakers before making his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante. The film, which featured Ajay Devgn’s iconic entry on two motorcycles, became a major hit and established Devgn as a leading action hero. Kohli went on to direct several popular films, including Kohrram, Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Anari No.1, Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, and Woh Tera Naam Tha. His films were known for their blend of action, drama, and romance, and he had a knack for launching new talent.

Kohli is survived by his actor wife, Aruna Arani, and two daughters from a previous marriage. His last rites will be held on Wednesday at the Oshwira crematorium. The news of his death has drawn tributes from the film fraternity, with many remembering him as a talented and generous filmmaker who contributed significantly to Hindi cinema. His legacy lives on through his memorable films and the careers he helped shape.
