The much-hyped Antony Varghese starrer ‘Kattalan’ witnessed a massive drop in collections on its fourth day, as the action thriller struggled to maintain momentum over its opening weekend.
According to the box office tracking platform Sacnilk, the film collected an estimated ₹0.61 crore net in India on Day 4 (Sunday, May 31). This represents a significant fall from its Day 3 earnings of ₹1.28 crore, indicating that the film is finding it difficult to hold onto its audience amid negative word-of-mouth and intense box office competition.
Total India net reaches Rs 7.29 crore
With the Day 4 numbers now added, ‘Kattalan’ has accumulated a total India net collection of ₹7.29 crore after its first four days of theatrical release. The film’s India gross collection stands at approximately ₹8.39 crore.
The week-on-week breakdown shows a troubling trend for the Antony Varghese-led film:
- Day 1 (Thursday, May 28): ₹3.80 crore net – A strong opening driven by franchise hype
- Day 2 (Friday, May 29): ₹1.60 crore net – A steep 57.9% drop
- Day 3 (Saturday, May 30): ₹1.28 crore net – Another 20% decline
- Day 4 (Sunday, May 31): ₹0.61 crore net – A further sharp decline
Shows reduced dramatically amid tepid response
The number of shows for ‘Kattalan’ was significantly reduced on Day 4, reflecting the tepid audience response. The film was screened across only 1,322 shows on Sunday, compared to 1,832 shows on Saturday and 3,582 shows on Friday.
The overall occupancy for Day 4 stood at a mere 14.4 percent, a drop from the already modest 16.1 percent recorded on Day 3. This decline is particularly concerning as the film was expected to gain momentum over the weekend.
Language-wise performance breakdown
The Malayalam version continues to be the primary contributor, though its numbers have fallen sharply. On Day 4, the Malayalam version collected approximately ₹0.98 crore net from 1,108 shows, with occupancy dropping to 15 percent. The Telugu version added ₹0.24 crore net with 18 percent occupancy, while the Tamil version contributed a mere ₹0.06 crore with 17 percent occupancy.
What went wrong for ‘Kattalan’?
Several factors appear to have contributed to the film’s underperformance:
1. Mixed to negative word-of-mouth: Early audience reactions have been lukewarm. The ETimes review noted that “for all its scale, technical polish, and relentless intensity, Kattalan ultimately remains emotionally distant”.
2. Severe box office competition: The film is facing strong competition from established blockbusters. ‘Drishyam 3’ recorded an impressive 71 percent occupancy on its opening day, compared to Kattalan’s 40 percent. The Suriya-starrer ‘Karuppu’ and Mohanlal’s ‘Drishyam 3’ continue to dominate screens, leaving little room for new releases to breathe.
3. Franchise fatigue: As the third installment in the Mikhael Extended Universe following ‘Mikhael’ (2019) and ‘Marco’ (2024), the film may be suffering from diminishing returns despite the brand recognition.
4. High budget vs. low recovery: According to trade reports, ‘Kattalan’ was made on a budget of approximately ₹45 crore, incorporating extensive shooting schedules in Thailand and Wagaman. With its current trajectory, the film will find it extremely challenging to recover its investment.
Overseas performance remains weak
The overseas collections have also failed to compensate for the domestic shortfall. In the first three days, ‘Kattalan’ managed to collect only approximately ₹6.21 crore from international markets, including North America, the Gulf, Singapore, and Malaysia. The film’s worldwide gross after three days stood at approximately ₹14 crore.
Industry experts weigh in
Trade analysts note that the sharp decline from Day 1 to Day 4 suggests that the film is heavily front-loaded, relying on initial fan interest rather than sustaining through positive word-of-mouth. The 57.9 percent drop on Day 2 was already a red flag, and the continued decline through the weekend confirms that ‘Kattalan’ has failed to connect with audiences beyond its core fan base
