Los Angeles, CA – The world of Westeros is finally heading to the big screen. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will be part of its theatrical slate beyond 2027, marking the franchise’s first-ever feature film. The announcement came through Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter 2026 shareholders’ letter, placing the project alongside other major post-2027 theatrical releases, including new entries in The Matrix, Batman, and The Jetsons franchises. While no specific release date has been set, 2028 is currently the earliest possible window, with a 2029 release also appearing plausible given the project’s early development stage.
The film will chronicle one of the most consequential chapters in Westerosi history: Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of six of the Seven Kingdoms using his dragons and armies. The events are drawn from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the historical source material for HBO’s House of the Dragon. The project took an unusual route to the big screen, with HBO and Warner Bros. previously exploring separate versions of the story. The theatrical version ultimately moved forward after Andor writer Beau Willimon developed a screenplay that convinced the studio the story could work as a feature film.

Warner Bros. formally revealed the movie during its CinemaCon presentation in April, where Aegon’s Conquest appeared on the studio’s “2027 and beyond” slate. Currently, there is no director or cast attached, and the film remains in the early stages of development, with casting and location scouting yet to begin. The timing could allow Warner Bros. to space out its expanding Westeros slate, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms expected to return for a second season in 2027 and House of the Dragon scheduled to conclude with its fourth season in 2028. A 2029 release would therefore give the franchise another major event after those television chapters. For a franchise built around dragons and dynastic warfare, the move to cinema feels like an obvious escalation, finally bringing Balerion the Black Dread and Aegon’s full story to the screen.
