Hyderabad, India – The Telugu adaptation of the beloved Hindi series Bandish Bandits arrives on Prime Video with high expectations but struggles to find its own rhythm. Jagamae Sangeetham, directed by Palnati Surya Pratap, transplants the story from the world of Hindustani classical music in Jodhpur to a Carnatic music household in Rajahmundry . While the series boasts a committed performance from Prakash Raj and a strong musical core, it ultimately buries its promising generational conflict under too many subplots and a flattened, superficial adaptation .
The narrative centres on Balu (Akshay Lagusani), a young musician trained by his revered grandfather, Shastri (Prakash Raj), to carry on the family’s pure Carnatic legacy and win the coveted Sangeetha Bharathi title . However, Balu’s life is complicated by his family’s mounting financial troubles, which his grandfather is kept unaware of, and his encounter with Pallavi (Sushmita Shetty), an ambitious pop singer who pulls him into the world of commercial music . The arrival of his estranged uncle, Thyagaraju (Meka Srikanth), who challenges his claim to the family’s musical legacy, further complicates matters . The series attempts to explore the clash between tradition and modernity, art and commerce, but the execution often feels shallow .
The show’s central weakness lies in its excessive subplots, which blunt the impact of its core conflict. Tracks involving an arranged marriage, the father’s financial struggles, and a mother’s quiet suffering add little to the narrative . The romance between Balu and Pallavi, which should be the emotional heart of the series, lacks chemistry, making it difficult to invest in their journey . Furthermore, the adaptation is criticized for being a “frame-by-frame remake” that mechanically substitutes Carnatic music for Hindustani and Rajahmundry for Jodhpur without capturing the cultural specificity or groundedness of the new setting .
Prakash Raj delivers a powerful performance as the rigid, intimidating patriarch, embodying the character so completely that you can both hate him and understand his motivations .
