The film has kept returning to the spotlight over the months despite getting stuck with censor woes, with the delay adding an element of intrigue

Drama around Vijay’s Jana Nayagan doesn’t seem to ebb. The film is back in the spotlight over the weekend, with fake news that the censors have granted it an A certificate. The makers have been quick to dismiss all such rumours, saying the film still awaits certification after final revisions. Unconfirmed reports, meanwhile, have added to the suspense, suggesting that the makers now target a late July or early August release.

Interesting how, ever since the film was pushed from its original release date of January 9 this year, Jana Nayagan has kept coming back to focus. Dhurandhar: The Revenge apart, this must be the most-discussed film of 2026 so far, although not necessarily for reasons Vijay or the film’s makers would desire.

A rare chief minister to star in a film

Let’s set aside the censor controversy, and first understand why the film pitches Vijay towards a realm of exclusivity. If and when Jana Nayagan releases, he’ll be only the third chief minister of Tamil Nadu to release a film while in office.

MG Ramachandran – MGR to fans and the industry – starred in the 1977 film Meenava Nanban and the self-directed Maduraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan (1978) while he was chief minister. There’s also M. Karunanidhi, who made a cameo appearance in the 1990 film Kavalukku Kettikaran as chief minister, besides writing the screenplay.

Vijay would join that distinct club of Tamil chief ministers with the release of Jana Nayagan.

Controversy compounds curiosity

Somehow, the pre-release controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan has taken anticipation of the film beyond Vijay’s dedicated fan base. What started as news headlines around the release delay morphed into curiosity. The run-up, after all, hasn’t been a regular one since January 5, when the CBFC sent the film to the Revising Committee.

As the battle between Jana Nayagan producers and the CBFC reached Madras High Court, fan wars also erupted on social media. Suddenly, discussions were not limited to fans and haters of the film’s superstar hero. Reddit and X, especially, have been brimming with defence of Vijay, as well as accusations that all that has unfolded in the past months is actually an elaborate publicity stunt.

The end winner is actually Jana Nayagan. If the conversation triggered online put to test the loyalty of Vijay’s fans, they rose to the occasion. On the other hand, his detractors, too, carried on with force.

Inspiration and leak talk

No sooner the trailer was released, many on social media felt the film bore a likeness to Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 2023 Telugu hit, Bhagavanth Kesari. Although the makers have not acknowledged it, the debate has taken the conversation around Jana Nayagan to a different level.

By April, when news of the film’s leak had gone viral, Jana Nayagan was being discussed beyond being Vijay’s last release. Broader conversation shifted focus to film piracy. There were half a dozen arrests subsequently and, attesting the graveness of the malaise, the Chennai police recently told Madras High Court that 1.2 crore people had watched the film on leaked prints.

Celebrity support adds to appeal

Importantly, growing talk flooded social media about how Jana Nayagan, a film starring the chief minister of an Opposition state, was stuck in a censor jam. Celebrities from different film industries have shown support to Vijay and pointed at censor high-handedness, including stars such as Kamal Haasan, Jiiva, Simbu, Harish Kalyan and Ravi Mohan, besides filmmakers such as Ram Gopal Varma and Pa. Ranjith.

Pan-India punch

While home turf Tamil Nadu is where he tested political waters this year, Vijay has been trying to position himself as a pan-India phenomenon for a while now. Jana Nayagan, interestingly, has already grabbed more attention on a pan-India level than all his previous films put together. That’s an advantage Vijay will hope to maximise when the film arrives in the theatres.
