With Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, he has begun to deliver on that promise—or at least 50 percent of it. However, the film’s mixed reviews have put the spotlight on Yash’s judgment, leaving fans and critics wondering: will he gamble again on unconventional projects, or will he return to safe, crowd-pleasing formula films?
A good part of Toxic reminds audiences of KGF due to the protagonist’s behavior. Yash, as the invincible gangster Raaya, is reckless and self-obsessed, a familiar alpha-male character seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Upendra movies. The lack of originality in the first half has been a major grouse for audiences who went in with high expectations. The second half, however, springs a surprise, showcasing a different Yash who commits fully to the character’s vulnerability. The film feels like two different movies in one, a result many feared when Yash and director Geetu Mohandas—two people with polar-opposite sensibilities—came together.
The clash of ideas is evident in Toxic, which several critics have described as a result of Trojan-Horse filmmaking. Yash, who co-wrote the movie, and Geetu have settled for the conventional grammar of a mass movie to convey a pertinent message for the classes. However, they haven’t struck the right balance, leaving people divided. One section of fans prefers Yash surrendering to his director in a complex script, while the other wants him to opt for an out-and-out commercial entertainer. Despite the mixed reviews, Toxic is holding its own at the box office, with audiences discovering the script’s potential and discussing its subversions.
Yash has established himself as an artiste who involves himself in every department of a project, unlike other pan-Indian stars. His willingness to take risks is evident, but the mixed response to Toxic has raised questions about his future choices.
Market pressure might direct him to mount his next project on a huge scale, but his fans would want him to be extra careful about execution. Amid this uncertainty, one thing is for sure: there is massive curiosity about his next move. As Yash said during the trailer launch, “I am someone who doesn’t listen to anybody.
