Hyderabad, India – Debut director Ravi Namburii’s Chennai Love Story, written and produced by Sai Rajesh, starts as a promising, emotionally resonant tale but falters significantly in its second half. The film, starring Sri Gouri Priya and Kiran Abbavaram, establishes a distinct mood and charm early on, only to lose its way with a mid-point twist that defies logic and tests the audience’s patience. While Sri Gouri Priya delivers a terrific performance that anchors the film, the narrative’s shift toward old-world melodrama squanders its contemporary potential.

The film opens with Nivedita (Sri Gouri Priya) being deserted by her fiance on her wedding day, finding refuge in alcohol as she navigates her emotional turmoil. The Chennai setting, with its local trains, beaches, and rain, lends a distinct charm, underscored by Viswas Daniel’s understated cinematography and Mani Sharma’s melodic score that pays homage to Ilaiyaraaja. The first half also weaves in the story of Steven Shankar (Kiran Abbavaram), an aspiring director, and his gradual love story with Nivedita. The writing is sharp, filled with self-deprecating humor and clever references to cinema, reflecting the filmmakers’ love for the medium. The characters are written with care, ensuring neither is judged, and the setups and payoffs are thoughtfully crafted.

However, after the intermission, the film takes a sharp turn. The plot twist requires a significant suspension of disbelief, and the narrative becomes predictable, with some scenes testing patience. The 179-minute runtime feels excessive, and the film’s attempt to balance contemporary themes with old-world melodrama creates confusion. The strength of the film lies in Sri Gouri Priya’s performance, who portrays vulnerability, rage, and helplessness with remarkable authenticity. Kiran Abbavaram delivers a measured, understated performance. Had the writing taken a more practical route post-intermission, Chennai Love Story could have been a compelling contemporary tale of trauma and healing. Instead, it becomes a partly engaging film that ultimately fails to soar.
