CHENNAI: In a moment that has sent waves of excitement through the film industry and among fans worldwide, legendary actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are set to share the screen once again. The iconic duo will collaborate on a new, highly-anticipated project directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, known for his blockbuster Jailer.
The yet-untitled film was announced on February 21, 2026, with a trademark quirky promotional video from director Nelson, instantly breaking the internet. This marks their first film together in lead roles since 1979’s Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum.
The Announcement: A Quirky Nelson-Style Tease
True to the director’s style, the announcement video was anything but ordinary. The glimpse playfully captures the confusion of director Nelson, who is seen unsure about whom to approach first between the two superstars.
The fun promo features a cascade of humorous moments, with Kamal and Rajinikanth playfully choosing opposite options while getting ready—from suits and boots to watches and sunglasses. The video, elevated by a retro-themed background score from music director Anirudh Ravichander, ends with Kamal Haasan asking Nelson a dicey question: “Who is the hero of the movie?”
This cleverly leaves the film’s central premise a mystery, fueling massive speculation.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Beyond the historic casting, the film boasts an exceptional technical crew:
- Director: Nelson Dilipkumar (of Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, Beast, and Jailer fame)
- Music: Anirudh Ravichander
- Cinematography: Rajiv Menon
- Editor: R Nirmal
- Art Director: DRK Kiran
The film is being produced under the banner of Red Giant Movies. It is important to note that this project is distinct from Thalaivar 173, Rajinikanth’s other upcoming film, which is produced by Kamal Haasan’s home banner, Raaj Kamal Films International, and directed by Cibi Chakravarthy.
A Reunion 46 Years in the Making
The collaboration is being hailed as a historic reunion. Both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan began their journeys as lead actors in the 1970s under the mentorship of the legendary director K. Balachander. They have starred together in numerous classic films, including:
- Apoorva Raagangal
- Moondru Mudichu
- 16 Vayathinile
- Aval Appadithaan
- Ninaithale Inikkum
Their last film together in lead roles was the 1979 fantasy film Alavuddinum Athbutha Vilakkum, although they have made guest appearances in each other’s films since then.
What We Know (And Don’t Know)
While the announcement has set the stage for a cinematic event, key details remain under wraps. The plot, the full cast, and the official title are yet to be revealed. However, with a team of this caliber and the promise of a Nelson directorial, expectations are sky-high.
Kamal Haasan had first hinted at the reunion in September 2025 at the SIIMA Awards, saying, “We were united long ago, but chose to remain apart… Now we are content with just half a biscuit again, so we have come together.” This poetic explanation only deepened the intrigue and anticipation.
With the shoot reportedly beginning soon, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see these two titans of Indian cinema share the frame once more.
