A chilling murder mystery set on the frozen strait between Alaska and Siberia is heading to the big screen. No Man’s Land, the critically acclaimed limited comic series from artist-writer Szymon Kudrański, is being developed as a feature film.
The project comes from producer Jason Berman’s A/Vantage Pictures (known for Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest), alongside Kudrański and Jon Levin’s Sustainable Imagination. Levin is currently in the Oscar race with the documentary short All the Empty Rooms.
A Premise Built on a Real-World Anomaly
The film’s logline unveils a premise ripe for tension: For three months each year, an ice bridge connects the U.S. (Alaska) and Russia (Siberia)—a frozen path known as the Ice Curtain. In 1963, the body of a woman is discovered frozen precisely in this no-man’s land, threatening to collapse the already fragile geopolitical balance between the two nuclear superpowers.
To solve the murder before the ice melts and triggers a global conflict, a veteran FBI agent and an ambitious new female KGB operative are forced into an uneasy alliance.
The story is inspired by the real-life Diomede Islands—Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (U.S.)—which are separated by just a few miles of water that freeze in winter.
From Page to Screen
The No Man’s Land comic, published under Kudrański’s One Man Art imprint via Image Comics, completed its four-issue run in late 2024. It has already drawn comparisons to the work of David Fincher, with outlets likening its tone to films like Zodiac and SE7EN.
Kudrański, whose extensive comic credits include Spawn, Action Comics, and The Punisher, created, wrote, and illustrated the series. For research, he delved into over 100 years of newspaper archives, uncovering “the most disturbing and mysterious activity occurred during the Cold War — reports of missing people, unexplained deaths, and events that were never fully accounted for.”
The idea was sparked by the unique geography of the Diomede Islands. “What if a body was found in the exact middle of the ice bridge — technically belonging to no one, outside any clear jurisdiction?” Kudrański noted in a statement. “This location demanded a story. Two villages on opposite sides of a frozen strait… almost poetic in how truces can be as fragile as ice itself.”
What’s Next
The film is currently in early development, with a writer and director yet to be attached. A trade paperback collecting the comic series is due out in April 2026, which is sure to build further anticipation for the film adaptation.
