In a recent interview, actor Saif Ali Khan revealed that Ranbir Kapoor had turned down the 2012 film Cocktail before he was cast, and that Kapoor had found the female lead’s role so compelling that he might have even considered playing it over his own part.
Cocktail, directed by Homi Adajania, was a coming-of-age romantic drama that marked a turning point for Deepika Padukone’s career. The film, which explored the complex friendship between two women, featured Padukone in the role of Veronica—a free-spirited, vulnerable, and emotionally scarred character. While the film was a critical and commercial success, its casting could have been entirely different.
A call from Shah Rukh Khan
Saif Ali Khan, who played the male lead Gautam, recalled how he came to be part of the project. “The film came to me because Ranbir Kapoor had refused it,” Saif told Bollywood Hungama . He added, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that or not, but Homi offered it to me.”
However, Saif was not initially keen on taking on the role. He told the director, “Homi, it’s a very good script, but it’s a girls’ film” . Saif’s reluctance stemmed from a belief that the male lead, played by him, was “a sort of a sidey” character, while the two female leads had the more substantial arcs .
That’s when Homi had a novel solution: he asked Saif to call Shah Rukh Khan. Saif recalled, “Homi asked me to call him (Shah Rukh) and say that if you want to see the film the way it should be seen, you should let me do the part.” Saif called SRK, who not only agreed but also gave the film “some amazing music” .
Why did Ranbir Kapoor say no?
Saif’s revelation comes on the heels of a discussion about who was initially considered for the role. The part was reportedly first offered to Ranbir Kapoor. However, the actor refused, and his reason might surprise you.
According to Saif, Ranbir had a specific reason for turning down the film. “He said, ‘Deepika’s part is so delicious, if I could only do that. I can’t play the guy…'”
This anecdote highlights how compelling Deepika’s character, Veronica, truly was. In an old interview, Homi Adajania himself confirmed, “Ranbir was offered the film but he said no. He didn’t like his part. He felt Veronica’s part was more interesting” . The role of Veronica was later offered to Deepika, and she accepted it, delivering a performance that is still considered one of her best.
