At a time when quite a lot of content seems to lack grace, comes The Sheep Detectives — a film sure to bring a smile to your face, a lump in your throat, and restore your faith in humanity.
Based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel Three Bags Full , and directed by Kyle Balda (the man behind the Minion movies), this animated murder mystery is simple and profound as it deals with death and slaughter for food — yet remains gentle even as it uncovers the harshest truths.
And it is laugh-out-loud funny too.
No one will call sheep simple-minded after meeting these woolly investigators as they are guaranteed to have Holmes, Poirot and the rest running for their magnifying glasses.

The Story: A Shepherd Dies, His Flock Investigates
In the little English town of Denbrook, George Hardy (voiced by Hugh Jackman) leads a solitary life, caring for his sheep — all of whom he has named.
Every evening, George reads his favourite whodunits to his flock, secretly admitting to himself that no matter how clever sheep are, they cannot understand what he is reading to them.
He could not be further from the truth.
The sheep listen carefully to his stories and are super annoyed when he stops reading just before the killer is unmasked. (One of them, Lily, correctly guesses the killer.)
When the sheep find George dead, they decide to find the murderer themselves — especially since the crime seems to be following all the rules of a classic whodunit.

What Works: A Gentle, Clever, Funny Fable
The Whodunit Structure
The film follows classic murder mystery rules:
- A dead body (the beloved shepherd)
- A list of suspects
- A clueless local policeman
- A clever amateur detective (Lily the sheep)
- A final reveal
But it subverts expectations in delightful ways.
The Humour
| Example | Why It’s Funny |
|---|---|
| Person falling asleep while literally counting sheep | Also becomes a clue pointing to the murderer — clever-funny |
| Sheep being annoyed when George stops reading before the killer is revealed | They understand more than he thinks |
| Sheep applying whodunit rules to real life | Life is not as neat as in a book — Lily learns this |
The Philosophy
The film deals with death and slaughter for food — yet it remains gentle. It is:
- Simple enough for children to enjoy
- Profound enough for adults to reflect on
- Laugh-out-loud funny throughout
“That it could also be a clue pointing to the murderer moves the needle to clever-funny. The fact that all this philosophy is wrapped in a crackerjack murder mystery is the icing on the cake.”
The Animation and Voice Work
“The sheep are truly a marvel of CGI and the voice work is exemplary.”
Each sheep character has a distinct personality, brilliantly brought to life by the star-studded cast.
What Makes This Whodunit Stand Out
| Traditional Whodunit | The Sheep Detectives |
|---|---|
| Detective is human | Detective is a sheep |
| Set in city or mansion | Set in a small English town with a flock |
| Serious tone | Witty, warm, and wise |
| Human suspects | Human suspects + sheep investigating |
| Life follows book rules | Lily discovers life is not as neat as in a book |
“While there are now many subversions of whodunits that are meta and fun, the ones that are most engaging are those that do not lose sight of the fact that they have a story to tell. And The Sheep Detectives is one of those wise, warm and witty whodunits.”
