Bengaluru’s Iconic Single-Screen Urvashi Reopens; Fans Heave Sigh of Relief

In a surprising turn of events, Urvashi theatre, one of Bengaluru’s most iconic single-screen landmarks, has re-opened its doors to the public. The much-talked-about Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar: The Revenge played to a full house on its reopening day, bringing cheer to cinephiles who feared the theatre’s permanent closure.

After the expiry of a 45-year lease, it had seemed like curtains would come down on the king-size theatre. But for now, it’s good news for fans.

A Brief Shutdown and a Sudden Reopening

The Kannada rural drama Landlord, starring Duniya Vijay, was the last film screened at Urvashi in January 2026 before the theatre shut down operations following a court order. The High Court of Karnataka had directed the tenants to hand over the vacant land, by demolishing the existing buildings, to the landlords by February 15, 2026.

There has been no official word on the latest development, but according to reports, the theatre owners have received a three-year extension of the lease.

Fans Celebrate

Regular patrons of Urvashi took to social media to express their relief and joy.

“We watched Dhurandhar 2 at Urvashi. We enquired at the ticket counter about the news of the theatre’s closure, and they said ‘Urvashi isn’t going anywhere’,” said one fan on Reddit.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) also celebrated the news, with many wishing that the theatre owners would consider a renovation to stay more relevant in the multiplex era.

A Flying Start

While it remains to be seen if Urvashi is back for a long run, the theatre’s second innings has got off to a flying start. Tickets for Dhurandhar 2 sold out quickly, underscoring the enduring love for the iconic single-screen experience.
